Screenprint Work

an exploration of what it means to be Mexican-American through screenprinting
Hasta La Raiz
11”x14” CMYK Print

Hasta La Raiz means “to the root.” It is a reference to Natalia Lafourcade song with the same title. Hasta La Raiz to me means never forgetting where I came from. The top picture is of my grandfather who was an important person in my mom’s upbringing, family, and overall a connection of where I came from. I never met him though, therefore what is left is the silhouette of him. Below is a picture of when my parents came to North Carolina in the 90s. Even though they came here to America, they always reminded me that I carried our Mexican culture through language and traditions. The silhouette of Mexico is on them, representing what they left behind. But even though they left Mexico the silhouette of the ends are in gold, representing myself and how I always carry my roots with me.

Hija y Madre
11”x13” CMYK Print

Hija y Madre is a comparison between my mother and I during our 20s. The comparison explored here is physical location of where we lived during our 20s. Despite it being very different places, there are some similar aspects: the place were my mother is from is very mountainous and crowded, which is much like Boone, North Carolina. Yet our experience during our 20s is very different. In the background is a brief description of what our life was during our 20 and how far the family has come. The pictures below are the mountains of Toluca mixed in with downtown Boone, intertwining the places we lived in. The coordinates below the pictures are the towns in which we lived in.

ESL
10”x10” Screenprint and Riso

“ESL” explores my personal lore growing up as a Mexican-American. I remember clearly in kindergarten my class went to the library for the first time and we had to check out books. Well I didn’t understand anything - I picked a book and started crying because I just didn’t understand. The teachers noticed and then realized that I didn’t understand english. I was put into ESL class and learn english quickly. My first book that I read fully in english was “Goodnight Moon.” In this screenprint I express the emotions using tear drops, images from the book, while the words “ I don’t understand” overlay on top of the story in spanglish. I printed myself out in riso to futher indicate the mix of languages.
